Should I take the standard deduction or itemize?
Itemize if your qualifying deductions (mortgage interest, state/local taxes, medical, charity) exceed the standard deduction: $15,000 single / $30,000 married for 2026. Most people take the standard deduction, but self-employed individuals often benefit from above-the-line deductions regardless of which they choose.
What's the difference between above-the-line and below-the-line deductions?
Above-the-line deductions (like self-employed health insurance, SE tax, student loan interest) reduce your AGI directly — you get them whether you itemize or not. Below-the-line deductions (mortgage interest, charitable giving) only apply if you itemize. Above-the-line is generally more valuable.
Do I need receipts for every deduction?
The IRS requires "adequate records." For business deductions: your bank or credit card statement is strong evidence, but keep vendor receipts for anything over $75. For charitable cash donations under $250: a bank statement or receipt suffices. For charitable donations of $250 or more: you need written acknowledgment from the charity. For non-cash donations over $500: Form 8283 is required.
Can I deduct home office expenses if I'm a W-2 employee working from home?
Not at the federal level. As of 2026, the TCJA 2017 suspension remains in effect — W-2 employees cannot deduct home office expenses on federal returns. However, some states (California, New York, Pennsylvania) still allow it on state returns. Self-employed individuals and business owners can still deduct it federally.
How does TaxLoot find deductions I've missed?
TaxLoot uses AI to scan your bank or credit card statement line-by-line, identifying transactions that qualify as deductible expenses under current IRS rules. It categorizes them (home office supplies, vehicle, software, medical co-pays, etc.) and produces a report showing your total missed deductions — usually in under 2 minutes.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. TaxLoot scans your statement and shows you the total amount you're owed for free. You unlock the full categorized breakdown (every transaction, every category, shareable report) with a one-time purchase. No subscription.
